YES TO MADNESS
a daily poetry project by jason lester
4/30/11
dig
the beetle whispers
but I tell him
I already began digging
hundreds of years ago
4/29/11
parrots steaming in the pot
4/28/11
he ate to fill an emptiness
smaller than a sandwich
4/27/11
like teeth in a dream
his penis kept falling
out of his fly
4/26/11
looking for a good time
we strummed the ukulele
but every song it played
was of cicadas and death
4/25/11
the candy hearts
slightly chipped
inside the plastic bag
never did find
somebody to love
4/24/11
the spider opens its mouth
for the baby to crawl inside
4/23/11
I pull on the handle
of the god machine
but its doors are rusted shut
4/22/11
we sit down in the fluoride seats
and take the dentist's office for a drive
4/21/11
inside the cupboard
comes a hungry answer
4/20/11
warming up
beside the fire music
4/19/11
I squeeze the guinea pig
mistaking her for a squeak toy
but she plays along
and squeaks anyways
4/18/11
I catch my glasses before they tumble
from the bridge of my nose
another escape plan foiled
4/17/11
what's your story
I ask the bird
but it just hops away
quietly bobbling its head
4/16/11
for safekeeping
I lock the baby
in the glove compartment
4/15/11
displaced by the war
my poem wanders the camp
with nothing to his name
except the endless days ahead
4/14/11
his dark breath
is a song that drags
the crackling ball and chain
when I close my eyes
the ant says hello
4/12/11
they call out
you can exit the labyrinth now
I call back
give me a few minutes
4/11/11
life suddenly punctuated
by another
desperate
exclamation
4/10/11
an uneasiness
woven in the crowcarpet
4/9/11
they popped his head open
like a cookie jar
but instead of cookies
they only found a brain
4/8/11
for his next trick
he raised the slightest corner
of his left eyebrow
4/7/11
on the photocopy
a piece of hair
that can never be wiped off
4/6/11
they loaded their
cart with snow
and went off to market
4/5/11
before singing his libretto
the weimaraner
ran through a few scales
4/4/11
in your arms
with my rubber fish
4/3/11
our hands searched
the screaming child's back
for the circuit breaker
4/2/11
before setting out
to cross the room
I stop for a smoke break
4/1/11
the dogs descend upon
the hospital for the blind
barking out demands
