YES TO MADNESS
a daily poetry project by jason lester
5/31/11
during my private time
in the bathroom
the ghosts keep trying
to break in
5/30/11
the road shouted warnings
in every language
5/29/11
I ask the man in the wall
to answer his phone
but the man in the wall
refuses
5/28/11
the only way out
was blocked by a child
pointing an enormous christmas tree
directly at my head
5/27/11
I eat half
and store the rest in my cheeks
for the long winter
5/26/11
waving hello to the taxi
as it drives towards me
waving goodbye to the taxi
as it drives away
5/25/11
as cars whiz by
the broken pedestrian signal
keeps ordering us to walk
5/24/11
as I pause to catch my breath
my feet call up
demanding a status report
5/23/11
amid the fireworks display
the big dipper
quite unnoticed
comes crashing down to earth
5/22/11
on the bow of the whaling ship
the puppy trots along
a harpoon gleaming in her mouth
5/21/11
pausing to take a picture
among the gonorrhea trees
5/20/11
pa rum pa pum pum
of snare drum
inside the bathroom fan
5/19/11
in the hallway
snoring
the elevator
5/18/11
I ride the bus home
clutching the ant farm to my chest
contemplating my next move
5/17/11
the pet alligator chases me
with a full grin of teeth
while it's owners assure me
he just wants to play
5/16/11
twitching in her sleep
first a forepaw
then hindpaw
then the nose
5/15/11
a man pretending to be a dog
a dog pretending to be a child
a child pretending to be a man
5/14/11
an infinite number of people
an infinite number of cameras
and the infinite sunset
I decide my position
is to let future me decide
in the decompression chamber
the pigeon coos
5/11/11
riding my ball
through the pinball machine
5/10/11
the soda can waited
between the two bins
unsure whether
it was recycling or trash
5/9/11
petting my cat
as my dog
pets me
5/8/11
the dilemma of deciding
between a long-term lease
or month to month
on my monkey
5/7/11
the sun purring
just below the horizon
5/6/11
holding a chicken carcass
in her mouth
the dog runs through the yard
trying to fly
5/5/11
I shake up the orange juice
and place it on the counter
but when I return with a glass
I find my baby there instead
cooing and sucking her thumb
5/4/11
stars starting up
in the machinery of night
5/3/11
after much whimpering
my dog clips the leash to my collar
and takes me out for a walk
5/2/11
the squirrel placed a leaf in each forepaw
pretending to be a tree
and when we arrived with ours chainsaws
he fell over yelling timber
5/1/11
the bucket and shovel
gossip among themselves
and occasionally look out
towards the wide expanse of sea
